Local Engagement

We take our environment seriously: Since the mid-70s, we have succeeded in significantly reducing environmental degradation at our production plants.

    Bremen
For example, when it comes to water pollution control, we have drastically improved waste water quality by installing innovative technologies along with water circuits for significant portions of cooling and processing water. In the case of air pollution control, production-integrated measures have led to more efficient dust and pollution avoidance.

Thanks to more internal utilisation, care is now taken in waste and recycling management so that virtually no waste is generated. Iron-containing dusts are turned back into raw material because they can to a large extent be fed back into production. By-products such as slag sand are transferred to the cement industry where they render the cement more corrosion-resistant and save the CO2 that would otherwise be generated in its creation.

Having reached this level, we are not going to ease up. That is why we are constantly readjusting our environmental requirements to the current state-of-the-art and are continually redeveloping our environmental management system. We offer this solemn promise: our system will be evaluated and certified in accordance with the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard.

We are one of the founding members of the “partnership of environmental concerns,”, an initiative of the federal state of Bremen for the exchange of information between environmentally engaged companies in Bremen and the federal state of Bremen. We are proud of our participation.

    Eisenhüttenstadt
The environmental management system at ArcelorMittal’s Eisenhüttenstadt plant (certified in accordance with the internationally recognised ISO 14001 standard) and the accident safety management system (in accordance with the requirements of the Hazardous Incident Ordinance) are components of the Integrated Management System (IMS) at the plant. As part of its internal and external inspections, the effectiveness of this management system is regularly evaluated and confirmed.

    Hamburg
ArcelorMittal Hamburg GmbH conducts responsible environmental protection in the course of its business activities in the modern production of steel. The basis for this is its environmental policy.

    • Compliance with all relevant environmental laws Compliance with laws and environmental standards is our basic prerequisite. Compliance is crucial in order to avoid management risks and guarantee the integrity of our site. Similarly, we are required to maintain our obligations toward other companies.
    • Continuous improvement of our environmental performance Continuous improvement is a fundamental component of the management system. We set goals for ourselves and monitor their realisation. That is how systematic improvement of our environmental performance will be achieved.
    • Environmental analyses of our production methods In order to secure our future, the application of technologies corresponding to the current state-of-the-art, improved process controls, and the contribution as well as the tracking of technological developments is indispensable.
    • Development and production of environmentally friendly products Our goal is to provide society with premium products. As part of this, it is very important to direct attention to environmental effects during all phases of the product’s lifecycle, already beginning during product development. This includes the production, usage and end-of-life phases.
    • Efficient use of resources The use of resources like raw materials, water, energy and land are important and are therefore worthy of special attention. That is why it requires sustained effort to continually improve the usage of these resources.
    • Commitment and responsibility of all employees to environmentally correct behaviour Every employee contributes his/her part to environmental performance and energy savings. Through targeted training courses and direct communication, they are sensitised to environmental protection in order for them to make their contribution to environmental protection in our company.
    • Communications in interested circles We carry on open communications on environmental themes and engage in the long-term exchange of experiences directed toward improving our environmental performance.
