ArcelorMittal was selected by Deutsche Bahn, after an open tender, to supply 129,000 tons of rails within the frame contract 2014. Both parties agreed upon an option for deliveries in a second year with the same quantity. "We are very pleased to be working with Deutsche Bahn on this project, which comes just after we have completed a major investment in our rail production facilities in Poland enabling us to produce rails of 120 meter length", says Augustine Kochuparampil, CEO for long products at ArcelorMittal Europe.
These rails will support the Deutsche Bahn network renewal and expansion programmes.
Dr. Bernd Striegel, Head of Procurement and sites at DB Netz AG: "Deutsche Bahn annually invests extensively in its railway network. In 2014, we aim to renew more than 3,000 kilometers of rails, 2,350 track switches, more than two million railway sleepers and about four million tons of gravel. In order to perform these construction projects with high quality and reliability, we need reliable partners such as ArcelorMittal, with whom we have been working successfully for years."
On Monday this week Poland's Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechociński officially inaugurated the investment at ArcelorMittal’s heavy sections mill in Dabrowa Gornicza, which will produce a variety of rail types and allows for the first time to produce 120 meter rails.
